Free AI, paid by labeled sponsored links
— not by hiding brands in the model
Last week Google-facing language jumped to unlimited free ChatGPT. The bill is inference. 2026 arXiv papers show how advertiser auctions can cover that cost — and why injecting ads into generation is the wrong design for an EU gateway.
Direct answer
“Free AI” is not free compute. OpenAI made text chats unlimited for Free and Go users in the week of 10 August 2026, with GPT-5.6 Luna as the default, while ads stay on those tiers. Advertisers can pay κ — the per-query inference cost — if the platform shows labeled sponsored links beside a clean answer. AGICY does not run a ChatGPT-style ad network today. This article is the design we would use on Copperway Playground (already listed at price 0) if sponsors cover tokens. SRA stays ad-free.
What people searched last week and last month
This is SERP and press language as of 13 August 2026 — not Google Search Console volume. site:agicy.ai still returns no Google hits, so these phrases are what the market is typing, not what AGICY already ranks for.
Last week (3–10 August 2026). Consumer queries clustered on free AI, unlimited ChatGPT, and GPT-5.6 Luna free. OpenAI removed the text-chat cap for Free and Go, kept limits on files, images, and voice, and kept ads on those plans. Paid Plus/Pro/Business/Education stay ad-free. Advertiser language moved with the product: ChatGPT ads, ads opt out, and how unlimited text changes the old “opt out and lose messages” bargain.
Last month (July–early August). ChatGPT ads have been live for Free/Go since February 2026. Lurie et al. audited that rollout (arXiv 2608.05008): ads sat below the answer, labeled Sponsored, and lower-income accounts saw more of them. Developers searched free LLM API and auto:free. Hetzner opened an experimental OpenAI-compatible inference API on German and Finnish servers — free during the test, no SLA, no DPA. EU buyers also searched Mistral / Le Chat as a European ChatGPT alternative. On 2 August 2026, EU AI Act transparency duties (including Article 50 on synthetic and commercial content) became an enforcement fact, not a 2026 calendar footnote.
This week (OpenRouter, 13 August 2026). Google is ranking OpenRouter for free AI models, free AI APIs for developers, discounted SKUs, and the new Auto router. NVIDIA Nemotron 3.5 Lightning is listed as free. Several other :free cards (Laguna, Liquid LFM) say prompts may train the vendor’s models. openrouter/auto:free is not free-only — the free-only router is openrouter/free. That is a marketplace coupon, not a PII vault. Copperway Playground is the conversion path for those queries; the OpenRouter contrast lives on A European alternative to OpenRouter.
What the arXiv papers actually say
There is now a 2026 literature on whether ads can fund generative engines. Four results matter for a free playground:
- Zhang, Jiao, Li, Xiong (CMU) — 2603.29071. Ads vs subscription is a cutoff rule. Show ads only when immediate ad payoff exceeds the long-term value of an ad-free reply (retention and later subscription). Both formats pay the same free-tier inference cost κ. Rival engines make heavy ads less sustainable because users can leave.
- Xu, Chen, Deng, Huang, Schoenebeck — 2601.19435. Decouple ads from generation. Advertisers bid on genres (stable semantic clusters), not raw prompts. VCG on genres is fast enough and keeps prompts off the advertiser. Users in their survey expected ads soon but rejected hidden in-text promotion.
- Lurie, Encarnación, Friedler, Metaxa — 2608.05008. First ChatGPT ads audit (Feb–Mar 2026). Ads were separated from model text and labeled. Lower-income accounts received more ads regardless of race. Fairness is a product constraint, not a later compliance patch.
- Hu, Zhang, Shi, Xiao — GEM-Bench, 2509.14221. Injecting ads into generation can raise click-through and still cut trust. Their Ad-LLM pipeline (generate clean, then insert) used about 2× more output tokens. In-generation ads can cost more inference than they fund.
Two more papers are useful as warnings. LLM-Auction (arXiv 2512.10551) studies auctions over generated content. Neuron Auctions (arXiv 2605.08326) steer brand-related neurons inside the model. That is undisclosed influence. It is the wrong pattern for an EU PII-vault gateway.
How AGICY would integrate sponsors — if we turn this on
Copperway Playground is already free. JSON-LD lists the offer at price 0. The missing piece is who pays κ when usage scales. The design that matches the papers, GDPR, and Article 50 is:
- Model text stays clean. No brand tokens in the completion. No system-prompt “mention our partner.”
- Labeled slots beside the answer. Sponsored or affiliate links, marked as such. Same visual family as ChatGPT’s early “Sponsored” row — except we would not need OpenAI’s inventory.
- Genres, not prompts. Advertisers bid on categories (travel, compute, legal tools). Raw user text does not leave the PII vault to an ad exchange.
- Cutoff. Show a sponsor only when expected revenue per query ≥ κ. Otherwise the session is ad-free or rate-limited. That is Zhang et al.’s rule, not a growth hack.
- SRA and paid keys stay ad-free. Businesses that cannot accept sponsored inventory reserve capacity or use a paid gateway path. Free is for people. Offtake is for firms.
Affiliate inventory already exists at /affiliates. That is a human channel today. The research question is whether the same labeled commercial links can sit next to playground answers and pay tokens. We are not claiming that network is live.
Keywords people and businesses will type in 2027
Forecast, not a Keyword Planner export. The 2026 shift — unlimited free text plus ads — makes these phrases the likely next-year cluster:
- People: free AI, unlimited ChatGPT, free AI without ads, ChatGPT ads opt out, free ChatGPT alternative EU, AI agents free, free LLM API Europe.
- Businesses: ChatGPT ads CPM, AI search advertising, sponsored agents, ad-supported LLM API, inference-time ads, compute sponsoring, EU AI Act Article 50 ads, GDPR ChatGPT ads, sovereign free AI.
Hetzner’s free EU experiment will not stay free once billing exists. OpenAI’s free tier will not stay ad-light if unlimited text holds. The durable EU offer is: try a gateway for €0 with disclosed sponsors, or reserve sovereign compute with no ads.
If you are a person or a developer
You can use Copperway now. It is free. There are no ChatGPT-style ads in the product today. If sponsored links ever appear, they will be labeled and beside the answer — not inside it.

If you are a business or an advertiser
If you need prompts off the public internet, skip free AI. Reserve SRA, review planned Cyprus GPU leasing, or book a briefing. If you want to sponsor inference — pay κ in exchange for a labeled slot next to relevant genres — start with the affiliate programme and a contact note. Estimates on pricing pages are pre-COD assumptions, not a live SLA.
